It has been my long standing practice to google search vegetarian and vegan restaurants in a prospective new neighborhood before moving anywhere. I constantly browse through happycow.net in order to read the latest reviews on all plant-based eateries in my proximity. Imagine my surprise when a friend relayed that a vegetarian cafe was in the building directly behind mine and had been in operation for the past few years. Though information on the establishment is relatively absent on the internet, I can’t help but feel slightly irritated and disconcerted that for the six months I’ve called my current condo home I have failed to realize the existence of a very affordable and quite enjoyable veg cafe right at my backdoor!
Chakra Cafe is located within Third Eye Wellness Center, a New Age spa which additionally hosts meditation, creative visualization, hypnosis, and theta healing workshops. A pair of ominous purple eyes leer behind the receptionist’s desk where guests can book appointments for mani/pedis, foot spas, Pevonia facials, massages, scrubs, body wraps, as well as a theta healing appointment. Even more interesting is the 15 minute free tarot card reading promo redeemable with a mani/pedi purchase every Tuesday and Thursday. Well-lit, clean, soft chanting music providing an appropriately relaxing atmosphere, Third Eye Wellness Center begs visitors to meander through its bookshelves and cabinets which display esoteric knick-knacks ranging from healing crystals to numerology handbooks. I grabbed such latter guide and made myself comfortable as I checked out Chakra Cafe, situated to the left of the reception area. Offering all sorts of vegetarian and vegan fare from Greek salads with tofu feta, to pumpkin soups, heartier mushroom burger paninis, and pastas, I decided on the Korean bowl. Essentially it was kimchi fried rice accompanied by two skewers of fried tofu and zucchini. Though nothing spectacular nor mind-blowing, it was hearty comfort food vegan- style. I am quite keen on trying their soy pana cotta in the future as well as their salads that come topped with tofu cheese. Another draw does seem to be their juices, smoothies and coffees, as I watched many women on their lunch break line in for beverages. Less than 200p avails a filling lunch and the distance from home ensures that this will be my new regular lunch spot. I will definitely be booking a nail spa as I am keen to have my tarot cards read (which will entail another blog post.) Though not particularly interested in theta healing (apparently similar to reiki where one taps into higher, theta vibratory levels to heal physical ailments on oneself or others)Third Eye does seem to draw an avid following partial to New Age philosophy. It is definitely worthwhile to check out this quirky cafe and spa, if not for a healing session, at least to read some psychic material while getting your nails done.
